Protection Amidst Uncertainty

Avoid Coronavirus Scams

With social distancing and more work-from-home efforts, our customers are more isolated than ever. Internet traffic is up more than 30% and we are more dependent on our computers and phones than we have ever been. Unfortunately, criminals are taking advantage of these factors and phishing emails and texts are now on the rise. To protect yourself…

  • Avoid debt relief offers from unknown and unsolicited sources.
  • Inspect email addresses and links to ensure their validity.
  • Remember that Capital Financial Inc will never call, email, or text you asking for your social security number.

Online and Mobile Services Alerts

With so much concern these days about identity theft and fraud, we encourage you to closely monitor your financial accounts to detect any unusual account activity faster. One of the easiest ways to do this is by receiving account alerts from Capital Financial Inc. All you need to do is register for Online Services, then download the Mobile Services app to set up the alerts you want to receive regarding your account.

Fraud Prevention

5 Steps to minimize your risk of fraud and theft
  • Never reply to emails, phone calls, or text messages that request your personal information.
  • Sign up for Capital Financial Inc Alerts.
  • Only do business with companies you know and trust.
  • Protect your PC with up-to-date anti-virus software.
  • Watch your U.S. Postal mail.

If you will be away from home for 3 – 30 days, sign up for “Hold Mail Service.” The Post Office has a forwarding service if you will be away more than 30 days.

Call the U.S. Postal Service at 800-275-8777 or submit a “Mail Hold” request online.

Mobile Services Security

Follow the tips below to keep your Services information safe.
  • Don’t follow links.
  • Avoid Services while on public networks.
  • Use official bank apps when possible.
  • Be careful of what you download.
  • Keep track of your mobile device.

Don’t be scared off from using your mobile device to access your bank accounts. Just be sure to practice good, safe behaviors and keep track of your gadgets. With a little precaution and attention, Mobile Services can be both convenient and secure.

Protecting yourself against phishing emails

Phishing emails are messages which seem to come from an official source asking for confidential information. These emails, which contact malicious attachments, are actually from hackers and fraudsters attempting to collect your personal information.

Financial cyber threat called Business E-Mail Compromise (BEC) is on the rise.

Examples of recent phishing email messages
  • “This is a confirmation that we have successfully taken payment for your storage unit. Please find attached a copy of your invoice for your records.”
  • “Your invoice needs to be approved.”
  • “Our records indicate that your account was overcharged. You must call us within 7 days to receive your refund.”
  • Subject: Invoice 10/AGHO838267388
“Can you please let me know when the attached invoices will be paid.”

Social Media Safety

As the popularity of social sites grows, so do the risks of using them. Hackers, spammers, virus writers, identity thieves, and other criminals follow the traffic.

Read these tips to help protect yourself when you use social networks:

  • Assume that everything you put on a social networking site is permanent.
  • Use caution when you click links that you receive in messages from your friends on your social website. Treat links in messages on these sites as you would links in e-mail messages.
  • Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network. Identity thieves might create fake profiles in order to get information from you.
  • Do not allow social networking services to scan your e-mail address book.
  • A common way that hackers break into financial or other accounts is by clicking the “Forgot your password?” link on the account login page. If the site allows, make up your own password questions, and don’t draw them from material anyone could find with a quick search.

Common Scams

Every time we connect to the Internet, whether it’s at home, work, or school, we make decisions that affect our cyber security. It is important to be aware of potential scams which may arise.
